A Cross-Linguistic Approach to Analysing Cohesive Devices in Expository Writing by Asian EFL Teachers

Recent research has shown that cohesive devices contribute substantially to writing quality and reveal L2 writers’ information, such as first or native language. This quantitative study adopted a cross-linguistic approach investigating the use of in expository by Asian EFL teachers compared English teachers. The involved 80 participants from three different L1 backgrounds, including 28 Vietnamese, 26 Filipino, Vietnamese Filipino were at comparable level proficiency. Around 800 words randomly selected each participant’s reports for analysis. Results One-Way ANOVA showed used similar pattern cohesion with lexical being most frequently, followed reference conjunction. In contrast, dispersed more widely across five main categories. results further than separately. Independent-Samples T-test omission redundancy be two common error types both implications pedagogy.
